Berlin - The Salvador Allende Bridge is one of the busiest road links in southeast Berlin. The bridge over the Müggelspree was built in 1981 with two directional carriageways on prestressed concrete spans over three stream piers. Due to an alkali-silica reaction and increasing cracking in the structure, a new replacement was necessary - a project in which Schachtbau Nordhausen is also playing a major role.
After the first construction phase had been opened to road traffic in 2020, the steel constructors from Schachtbau Nordhausen had started the second construction phase at the beginning of September 2021. Depending on the welded sections, the longitudinal shifting of the steel structure across the Müggelspree will be carried out in four individual shifting phases as planned. At the beginning of December, four of a total of six sections had been welded as planned. In accordance with the permit conditions, the waterway had to be completely closed to shipping from December 8 to 10 to allow the steel structure to be shifted across the waterway.
On December 8 and 9, it was finally possible to carry out the second phase of shunting (eastern superstructure). The steel structure, which weighs approx. 600 t, was moved 44 m across the waterway by the experienced experts from Schachtbau and by means of the company's own shunting equipment. The very unfavorable weather conditions with temperatures around freezing point and recurring light snow showers posed an additional challenge. However, under the supervision of foreman Mario Grätz, the shifting was carried out successfully and on schedule. The final shifting to the incoming north side is scheduled to take place before the end of February.
